Domestic accidents ......

According to the latest figures from the Institut de Veille Sanitaire (INVS), the accidents of everyday life in France each year represent about 18 500 deaths: between 11 500 fatal domestic accidents (falls, fires, DIY , ingestion of products) and 7000 deaths in accidents school, sports or leisure.

These accidents are the third leading cause of death in France after cancer and cardiovascular disease. They are also 4.5 million wounded, including 2.7 million domestic accidents alone. The last detailed study, covering the year 2006, shows that they accounted for 3.6% of the total mortality of the year.

Falls alone accounted for half of those killed, before suffocation (15%). Drowning and poisoning are each represented a thousand dead, while the census enumerated 496 victims of the fire.

FALLS, FREQUENTLY AMONG SENIORS
figures INVS however, show a decrease of 11% of all such accidents for the period 2004-2006 compared to 2000-2002, especially for children under 15 years, and probably "
through prevention campaigns and regulation of children's products"
says INVS.
